Louisiana SPCA

Louisiana SPCA creates a better experience for animals and humans

After devastating destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, the Louisiana SPCA recently unveiled a new, 40,000-square-foot facility that serves more than 43,000 animals annually and reflects a modern, sustainable focus. “Every aspect of this new building is energy and environmentally efficient,” shares Joe Young, communications associate. From responsibly disposing construction waste to installing timed faucets and incorporating abundant natural light into the facility, the organization took a holistic, sustainable approach to creating spaces in and around the SPCA. “For example, we've got a great water retention garden that helps hold water during heavy rains. Instead of water running into the surrounding area and flooding our neighbors, the garden holds it until it can naturally drain back into the ground.”

With regard to interior material selection, Young shares, “We carefully chose materials with low emissions, which are better for animals and humans.” In particular, the flooring was held to high standards. Seeking an upgrade from the previous facility’s concrete floors, the SPCA selected nora® rubber flooring to cover the new space and create a welcoming impression, making a visit to the SPCA a positive experience.

“When you go to adopt, you don't want to be depressed. You want to feel happy, because you’re making a happy decision. A lot of thought went into making sure the space looks nice and is easy to clean,” says Young. “The non-porous surface is easily sanitized, which is so important in combatting the spread of contagious conditions among the animals.

“For example, ringworm is a big issue in animal care facilities,” Young continues. “We need to ensure that ringworm is contained, because it's very difficult to treat and it can be quite common, especially when our humane law enforcement folks bring in animals off the street.

“The rubberized flooring has been a great fit for this facility,” Young concludes. “It always looks nice and is easy to clean, so it works really well.”
